The Construction of Performative Identities in Patriarchal Religious Institutions: A Study of Annie Besant’s An Autobiography with Special Reference to “Atheism as I Knew and Taught it”

Annie Besant was a Victorian radical whose outspoken views included advocacy of women’s rights and atheism. In her mid-forties she went to live in India. Her An Autobiography (1893) charts dramatic political ethical awakenings, up the point where joined Theosophical movement. It describes how unhappily married clergyman, contemplated suicide, embraced atheism, legally separated from husband. The present paper is an attempt explore Besant’s rebellion against patriarchal religious institutions through in-depth study autobiography with special reference chapter “Atheism as I Knew Taught It”. will analyze revolted performative construction identity which result discourses, breaking binary theist/atheist gave strength further deconstruct male/female binary.
